During its 4.5 billion years of existence, our planet has been through a lot. Against all odds, it developed in such a way that it became able to host life. It’s the only celestial body we know of that does, even though our neighbour, Mars, might once have had the right conditions, too.
We’re incredibly lucky to have this place as our home, something I appreciate more after writing a couple of features about Earth’s history and the exploration of Mars for How It Works magazine’s new Story of the Solar System special.
